Converting JPG to XPM... how?

I realise that AfterStep does not (as yet) provide the ability to use
jpeg as background images (tho' I'm sure the good work Sasha's done will
eventually be included in some form or another). However, I have a much
loved jpeg that I wish to use. Does anybody know which tool I can use
to convert the jpeg to an XPM?

I have tried GIMP but it doesn't seem to be able to convert. That is, I
opened the image in GIMP and tried to save as XPM ... it failed with an
error message.
