Actually I got a lot of linker errors like this one trying to build beta3.
The problem was that (for whatever reason), the Makefiles were missing
some -lXext -lX11.  If the individual source files compile without errors,
but the final (linking) stage of the compile gives you tons of these
messages, this could be your problem.
