	First off, I hope you are using - this is the recent
stable release; if you are not, then your problems stem from using 1.4.0.
	Some advice I can give is to start with a default look that you
like and then customize it - making one change at a time (using
menu>Quit>Update look/feel) if it crashes then you know why and have
something to ask for clarification on the syntax here on the list.  If you
haven't already noticed there is also a perl script (with instructions in 
the tree) to migrate your .steprc to the new look/feel format.
	It is really fairly straight forward when you compare a few files
and your .steprc file side by side.
