Licq is very stable.  But if you want to try other things, check:

Gimp 1.0 requires GTK+ 1.0.x  If you want to use GTK 1.1.x, you have to
use Gimp 1.1 which is a development release (but still works well)

It's definitely time to move to 1.6.0.  Just make sure you have libXpm and
libjpeg and if you want, libpng.  Other than that, it's a fairly simple
install.  If you don't have anything special going on in your 1.0, i'd
just remove it all and install 1.6.0 fresh.
