In your ~/G/L/A/non-configurable, there are "n_background.[size].as.xpm"
files, where "n" is the number of the desktop.  Replace these, and you'd
be set.

But why don't you want to use the startmenu?

Oh, and also, the suggestion to upgrade to 1.6.0 is not amiss.
