:First, aterm 0.3.3 did not install anything in my app-defaults dir. Does an app

Whatever the answer, you need to check whether it's compiled in and
it's not by default - see feature.h (look for XAPPLOADDIR).

Now the actual answer, it looks for
    XAPPLOADDIR / APL_SUBCLASS (where APL_SUBCLASS = ``Aterm'')
so if XAPPLOADDIR is ``/usr/lib/X11/app-defaults/'' then it looks for
    /usr/lib/X11/app-defaults/Aterm

:In the latter two files, all
:entries omit the program name and start with the asterisk. So you would have
:simply *transparent: true. But given my doubts mentionned above, I have my
:doubts that this will work. So you can wait 'till someone competent answers, or
:spend 15 minutes or "trial & error".

You can have an empty class name because the only program likely to read
this program specific file is that program.
