Re: error: afterstep is a directory?

Maybe it went by in a list of stuff and you didn't see it.  Maybe you
could try updating your locate database ('updatedb'), and do the
following:
locate afterstep | grep bin

Since the executable is probably in a bin dir, that should filter out most
of the stuff you are not interested in.
