well, I wanted to do it for the same reason...
what I was thinking was to have a crontab
that changes the autoexec file,
so that upon startup it just refreshes the startmenu database
and exits. and then have afterstep run in the middle
of the night and refresh itself. and then put the old
autoexec file back into place. this could probably
be done on another display, if X was already running... couldn't it?

I just need to know what command to put in my autoexec file
to refresh my startmenu... even if I just wanted to do it every
time I start afterstep.
