X should not hang on i7k laptop and most other
laptops if you enable APM.  Often with RH, the
kernel recompiled is installed in a wrong place,
so you get in fact the old kernel still.  To make
sure you have APM: study 

dmesg

output, there should be APM BIOS 1.2 or something
like that there, and do

ls /proc/apm

-- there should be that process running.
