setterm -powersave on
setterm -powerdown 1

think that makes your monitor go off 1 minute after the screenblanker
comes on.

Does putting the monitor into powersaving/standby/sleep mode do the same
as pressing it's powerswitch? I.e cut power to all the high voltage zappy
bits inside.
