the default installation should start up the wharf for you. Although i think
i may have mis-understood you.

# 2. Is there a convinent tool to set up menus? ascp doesn't seem to do it,
# and handling the entries manually is awkward.

i did it the hard way, editing
/usr/local/share/afterstep/non-configurable/startmenu and then discovered what
the start direcory was for :)
If you go into /usr/local/share/afterstep/start you'll notice a load of
directories that correspond with the items in the 'startmenu' (change the
name! call it Root Menu or something... the Startmenu is what Windows has :)
in the directories are files, if you look in the files it has a line that
runs a program and the name of an icon to show.
Just edit and fiddle until it's how you like it, start AS and from the startmenu
choose 'update startmenu' and it'll change to how you set it.

# And I noticed if you use the new vertical titlebars with the gradient text
# option, the text doesn't wrap to one character per line and as such is all
# but cut off when a gradient is in use. This seems like more of an oversight
# than an actual bug.

i had very strange effects with the vert-titlebar and the look.Black look,
text would appear in the titlebars for every window _except_ the one with
the focus.

Does AS have a window button to maximize the window to full-screen? None of the
looks i've tried have one.
