JPG vs. PNG, the Gamma war

Hi,

I'm having trouble with the gammacorrection performed by
afterstep/asetroot. If I set the SCREEN_GAMMA value to 2.2 all PNGs
appear normal, but all the JPGs appear way to bright. If I use 1.0 on
the other hand, all the JPGs appear OK, but the PNGs get to dark. XPMs
look OK in all situations...

Is there any way to remedy this or do I just have to get consistent on
whether I prefer to use PNG or JPG?
