I'd compiled my AfterStep-1.6-10 on a Sun machine running SunOS 4.1.4
without being a root user.

You need the xpm library in order to compile AS 1.6 and make sure that you
include the location of your xpm library in your PATH.

Here's my configuration:
./configure --prefix=$HOME/coolstuff/afterstep
--x-includes=$somepath/X11R6/include --x-libraries=$somepath/X11R6/lib
--enable-texture --with-x --with-xpm-includes=$somepath/X11R6/include
--with-xpm-library=$somepath/X11R6/lib --with-xpm --disable-script
--with-png=no --with-jpeg=no

where

$HOME/coolstuff/afterstep is the path you want to execute AS
$somepath is the location of the X11 library files.

But before that, you first need to compile the files in asimagelib directory
that comes with AS 1.6 to generate the library file libasimage.a to support
AS 1.6

Hope this helps.
