Compile problems on a solaris

Ok, so I downloaded the Solaris 2.6 binary for AfterStep and can't get
it to run. I don't have access to root, so I installed everything in my
user dir. I figure that some directory structure was compiled into the
binaries so it just wont run on my site.

So I go to compile the source code myself and run into more problems:

1) All the .depend files have extra "\" characters in them. Here is an
example

./catstring3.o: \
         ../configure.h \
         ../include/aftersteplib.h \

./copystring.o: \ # rest of file.....

The "\" after the aftersteplib.h entry means that the end of line is
ignored. This causes my make to get confused as to what files depend on
what. I was forced to edit all the .depend files to remove the extra
character

2) when I type make, I get this error after a while:

../include/module.h
mksh: Fatal error: Cannot load command `../include/module.h': Permission
denied
Current working directory /homes/hartmam/After/lib
*** Error code 1
make: Fatal error: Command failed for target `ASmodule.o'
Current working directory /homes/hartmam/After/lib
*** Error code 1
make: Fatal error: Command failed for target `all'

Why does it think module.h is a command it needs to run?

3) When I type make -n to see what the entire make will do, I get this:

make: Fatal error: Don't know how to make target
`../Script/Widgets/libWidgets.a'
*** Error code 1
Current working directory /homes/hartmam/After/src/Script
make: Fatal error: Command failed for target `all'

So I'm really confused at this point. I know I have the libXpm, libjpeg,
and libpng setup correctly because the configure script found them where
I put them and built the Makefile correctly.

Can anyone help?

BTW - I'm running Solaris 2.6 on a sparcstation 20.
