No, you don't. Take a look in the base.xxbpp file in your 
/GNUstep/Library/AfterStep/ directory (or /usr/local/share/afterstep?). 
There you will find the setting for screens per desktop. And in the 
"pager" file you will find the settings for how many rows and colums of 
desktops you want.

(Unless that has changed a bit in the last versions, my config is getting 
a bit old...)
