themes not working

Something strange has happened with my Afterstep. I'm running AS 1.8.8,
and for the past couple of months it has been happily using the BeAS
theme. Because it's Sunday and I was bored I downloaded a new theme and
tried to install it.

The theme installs itself (I can see the files in ~/G/L/A/desktop/themes)
but doesn't take effect, the default theme still shows. I've tried:

putting the theme's tarfile into ~/G/L/A/themes

but the theme refuses to show itself. I removed my ~/GNUStep directory
and tried again. This had no effect, neither did removing AS completely and
compiling it again. I also created a new user on my system and tried it with
that (the user had a totally blank ~) and that didn't work. I've also tried
just running AS, with no gnome-session and that made no difference.

Oddly enough the title-bars, feel, and looks don't work but the background
picture installs itself!

I don't know what's happened because I could used to switch themes without
any problems. I'm running GNOME, XFree86 4.0.2, kernel 2.4.2 on a
heavily-modified Slackware machine, but that's what I was using the last
time I tried this.

Apart from the ~/GNUStep directory and /usr/local/share/afterstep is there
anywhere AS stores things that I might have broken? and is there a list of
libraries and their versions (the only thing I can think of is I've got
an incompatible version of something on that AS doesn't like, but no errors
are printed out when X starts up).

I start AS+GNOME by making a .xinitrc that looks like this:
