Oops, should have read back further in the thread BEFORE popping off! -- 
The solution:  

MyStyle "*WharfTile"
  BackPixmap    128 ASAllTransparent.xpm
~MyStyle

fixed me & xplanet up too!!!!!!!!!!  :-)
