Wait until the release of XFree86 4.3, which is due out Real Soon Now,
and upgrade to that. The Type1 render which shipped with the X
distribution will be replaced by FreeType, for non CID-keyed fonts,
and most people have found the font rendering to be better with the
latter. You could use one of the latest snapshots, either--look in the
ftp://ftp.cica.es/mirrors/XFree86/snapshots/ directory.
