If I try to use the beta with the libAfterBase and libAfterImage
I was using with 1.99, from about a month ago, I get

[startup stuff]
afterstep:1060988376:asvisual.c:create_visual_window:990:>parent = 48, mask = 0x2218, VisualID = 0x23, Border Pixel = 0, colormap = 20
afterstep:1060988376:asvisual.c:create_visual_window:941:>Colormap 20, parent 48, 1x1+0+0, bw = 0, class 1
afterstep:1060988376:asvisual.c:create_visual_window:990:>parent = 48, mask = 0x2A08, VisualID = 0x23, Border Pixel = 0, colormap = 20
/usr/bin/X11/afterstep: relocation error: /usr/bin/X11/afterstep: undefined symbol: sleep_a_millisec

And X shuts down.

If I try to compile current CVS libAfterBase, I get

fs.c: In function `my_scandir':
fs.c:539: `DIR' undeclared (first use in this function)
fs.c:539: (Each undeclared identifier is reported only once
fs.c:539: for each function it appears in.)

make: *** [fs.o] Error 1

after a lot of

checking malloc.h usability... no
checking malloc.h presence... yes
configure: WARNING: malloc.h: present but cannot be compiled
configure: WARNING: malloc.h: check for missing prerequisite headers?
configure: WARNING: malloc.h: proceeding with the preprocessor's result
configure: WARNING: ## ------------------------------------ ##
configure: WARNING: ## Report this to bug-autoconf@gnu.org. ##
configure: WARNING: ## ------------------------------------ ##
checking for malloc.h... yes

which I will go and report.

This is with
gcc-3.3.1-1

so it could well be at my end.
