Ok, after fighting with this some more (and getting CVS afterstep as of
15 Sept 2003), I've got the thing recognizing the AfterStep libraries
but still not building support in, apparently because:

(from the aterm config.log)

configure: In function `main':
configure:4537: warning: implicit declaration of function `mystyle_make_image'
/usr/X11R6/lib/libAfterStep.so: undefined reference to `XineramaQueryScreens'
/usr/X11R6/lib/libAfterStep.so: undefined reference to `XineramaQueryExtension'
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
configure:4547: $? = 1
configure: failed program was:
#line 4532 "configure"
#include "confdefs.h"
int DeadPipe(int nonsens){return 0;}
int
main ()
{
mystyle_make_image()
  ;
    return 0;
}

I'm using XFree-4.3.0-29, the current bleeding edge RedHat Raw Hide
packages; they don't have a libXinerama.so anywhere, though there is
a /usr/X11R6/lib/libXinerama.a in -devel
