[As-users] Performance with Desktop->Pictures

I've been accumulating background images; these are 1600x1200 PNG files,
slung into .afterstep/backgrounds

The .mini files are really, really simple, based on what's there for the
default backgrounds:

<scale width="$minipixmap.width" height="$minipixmap.height">
  <img src="BronzeQueen"/>
</scale>

Now that I have a dozen additional backgrounds, clicking
Desktop->Pictures slugs -- 5+ seconds of maxed CPU before the pictures
menu comes up.

Is there something I can do to get Afterstep to cache the little tiny
16x16 thumbnails, or to otherwise speed up the processing? There almost
has to be, given that the default backgrounds come up quickly, but I'm
not at all sure what I should be doing.

Thanks!
