I'm new to this list, and I apologise if this has been brought up
earlier. If that is the case, could anybody point me in the direction
of the answer?

My problem is that no matter what I do, the delete key produces ^? and
the backspace key produces ^H in aterm (in xterm, these values are
\e[3~ and ^?, respectively).

I got the aterm rpm from ftp.afterstep.org (the yum fedora-as repo) on
a Fedora Core 4 RedHat system. I have used aterm for several years
without having this problem, but not on this system. This far, I have
not tried compiling and debugging. Some (possibly) relevant output
from shell commands:

$ aterm --version

$ yum list '*aterm*' | grep installed | sed 's,  *, ,g'
aterm.i386 1.0.0-3 installed

$ xrdb -q | grep -i 'aterm.*key'
Aterm*backspacekey:     \177
Aterm*deletekey:        \033[3~

(I've also tried prefixing with XTerm* and just * instead of Aterm*,
without any apparent result.)

$ xrdb -q | grep -i 'override' | sed 's,\\n,\\n\n,g'
*VT100.Translations:    #override               <Key>BackSpace: string(0x7F)\n
              <Key>Delete:    string("\033[3~")\n
              <Key>Home:      string("\033[1~")\n
              <Key>End:       string("\033[4~")

Other resources, like Aterm*tinting and Aterm*geometry, work fine.

Backspace and delete produce the right key events (verified using

Does anybody have any idea what could be causing this? Has anybody
experienced similar behaviour? There is probably something I'm missing
or doing wrong, but as I seem to be unable to see what, I'd appreciate
some help on shedding some light on this.
